Among the predatory fish species living in freshwater rivers, lakes and reservoirs, the pike is the most numerous and popular among fishing enthusiasts. Found in almost any body of water (from a small forest lake to a large full-flowing river and reservoir), this toothy predator is so loved by fishermen, primarily due to the wide variety of gear used to catch it.

About what gear for pike fishing is used in the open water season and in the cold season, and will be discussed in this article.

Tackle for open water

For catching pike in the open water season (spring-autumn), spinning, trolling tackle, vents, mugs, and live bait are used.

Spinning

Spinning is the most common pike tackle used by both amateur and sport anglers.

The main elements of spinning gear are a special spinning rod, reel, main line or braided line, a metal leash with a bait attached to it.

Rod

For pike fishing, carbon fiber or composite spinning rods of fast or ultra-fast action are used with a bait test from 5-10 to 25-30 gr.

The length of the rod, which affects the convenience of fishing, the casting distance and the efficiency of the fight, is selected taking into account the conditions of fishing:

• For fishing from the shore on small rivers, as well as when fishing from a boat, short forms 210-220 cm long are used.
• For fishing in medium-sized reservoirs, rods with a length of 240 to 260 cm are used.
• On large reservoirs, lakes, as well as large rivers, spinning rods are most convenient, the length of which ranges from 270 to 300-320 cm.

It is best for a beginner pike spinner to choose and assemble his first spinning set under the guidance of a more experienced angler. The right choice of rod, reel, cord allows a beginner to quickly master the basics of this fishing and avoid many of the inconveniences faced by owners of inexpensive and low-quality gear (frequent tangles of the cord over blank rings, resets of loops by a reel, etc.).

In some reservoirs for catching pike, tackle is used with a small fish (live bait). Its catchability in conditions of a large number of fodder small fish is much higher than that of various artificial baits.

Spinning rigs

When fishing in places with shallow depth, a lot of grass, frequent hooks, the following spaced equipment is used:

• Carolina (Carolina rig) – the main elements of the Carolina rig used for pike are a weight-bullet moving along the main fishing line, a locking glass bead, a composite leash 35-50 cm long, consisting of a 10-15 cm string and a piece of fluorocarbon. An offset hook with a silicone bait (slug, twister) is attached to the metal string using a fastener.
• Texas (Texas rig) – the main differences between the Texas equipment for pike fishing from the previous one are that the bullet sinker and the locking glass bead do not move along the main line, but along a composite leash.
• Branch leash – an effective spinning rig, consisting of a triple swivel, to which a 25-30 cm line branch with a teardrop-shaped or rod-shaped sinker is attached, a compound leash (monofilament fishing line + thin guitar string) from 60-70 to 100-120 cm long with offset hook and silicone bait at the end
• Drop shot (Drop shot) – a meter long piece of thick fishing line with a stick-shaped sinker and 1-2 lures 60-70 mm long, mounted on hooks tied to the fishing line. The distance between the baits is 40-45 cm.

Much less often for catching pike, such equipment as jig-rig and tokyo-rig is used.

The hook in pike tackle must be strong and reliable – under heavy loads it must break off, and not unbend.

Trolling gear

This tackle is a very hard (ultra-fast) spinning rod 180-210 cm long with a test from 40-50 to 180-200 grams, a powerful multiplier reel, a durable braided cord, a deep bait – a heavy oscillating lure, a sinking or deepening wobbler, a large twister or vibrotail on a weighty jig head.

Since this type of fishing involves pulling the bait over hard-to-reach river and lake pits, in addition to the most expensive gear, it is not possible without a boat equipped with a motor.

Zherlitsy

Of all the do-it-yourself gear for pike, the vent is the simplest, but at the same time quite catchy. This tackle consists of a wooden slingshot, on which 10-15 meters of monofilament fishing line 0,30-0,35 mm thick are wound, a sliding sinker weighing from 5-6 to 10-15 grams, a metal leash with a double or triple hook. Live fish (bait fish) no more than 8-9 cm long are used as bait for the zherlitsa.

In the working position, part of the fishing line with equipment is unwound from the slingshot, the live bait is put on the hook, and it is thrown into the water.

Mugs

A circle is a floating vent, consisting of:

• A foam disc with a diameter of 15-18 cm and a thickness of 2,5-3,0 cm with a chute for winding the main fishing line with equipment.
• Masts – wooden or plastic sticks 12-15 cm long.
• 10-15 meter stock of monofilament line.
• Equipment consisting of an olive sinker weighing from 6-8 to 12-15 grams of a meter line leash, to which a 20-25 cm string with a tee is tied.

Catch on circles in reservoirs with stagnant water or a weak current. At the same time, sites with a flat bottom and a depth of 2 to 4-5 meters are chosen.

In small reservoirs (lakes, ponds, bays and oxbow lakes), a live bait float rod is used to catch pike, consisting of:

• hard 5-meter Bolognese rod;
• inertialess coil size 1000-1500;

• a large float with a long antenna and a load of 6 to 8-10 grams;
• 3-5 gram sliding sinker-olives;
• metal tungsten leash 15-20 cm long with a large single hook No. 4-6.

In a live bait fishing rod, it is very important not to ship the rig too hard or too weak, as this will worsen the sensitivity of the gear, increase the number of idle and false bites.

Less often in the summer for fishing for pike, they use an elastic band – a bottom tackle with a rubber shock absorber, more adapted for catching bream, roach, silver bream, carp, carp.

Thanks to a simple design, such tackle can not only be bought at a fishing store, but also made by hand by performing the following manipulations:

1. On a wooden round six with a length of 30-40 cm, with the help of a self-tapping screw, a reel is fixed from under the fishing line with a soldered small handle. The reel should rotate freely, releasing the fishing line when biting.
2. From a piece of waterproof plywood, a square stand with a slot for fishing line and a hole for a six is ​​cut out with a jigsaw.
3. A signaling spring is applied to the tip, fixing it with a small cambric from external insulation from a thick cable.
4. A fishing line is wound on the reel, a sliding sinker-olive, a silicone stopper are put on, a leash with a hook is tied.

All wooden parts of homemade gear are torn with black oil paint. To store and carry the vents, use a homemade box from the freezer with several compartments and a convenient harness.

Tackle for sheer lure and fishing on a balancer

For winter pike fishing on a balancer, vertical spinners, a bulldozer, a carbon fiber rod 40-70 cm long is used with an inertial reel with a diameter of 6-7 cm with a 25-30-meter supply of monofilament fishing line wound on it with a section of 0,22-0,27 mm, thin tungsten 10 cm leash.

Fishing equipment for pike

All fishing tackle for pike requires the use of such special devices in the process of fishing as:

• A small fishing hook with a comfortable handle, needed to retrieve large fish caught from the hole.
• A good landing net with a strong long handle and a voluminous mesh bucket.
• A set for extracting a hook from the mouth – a yawner, an extractor, tongs.
• Kana – a container for storing live bait.
• Lil grip is a special clamp with which the fish is removed from the water and held in the process of removing the bait hooks from its mouth.
• Kukan is a durable nylon cord with clasps. It is used for planting caught pikes and keeping them alive.
• The little girl is a small spider lift, the square mesh fabric of which has a cell of no more than 10 mm.
• The retriever is a sinker with a line ring located on the side. It is used to beat off lures caught on snags, grass, and to measure depth.

When fishing from a boat, an echo sounder is often used – a device that allows you to determine the depth, bottom topography, the horizon in which there is a predator or flocks of small fish.

Thus, a wide variety of tackle allows you to catch a toothy predator almost all year round. At the same time, it is very important for the angler not to forget about the ban on catching this fish during the spawning period. Both in the open water season and in winter, it is forbidden to use nets for pike fishing: the use of net fishing gear is punishable by large fines and, in some cases, criminal liability.
